Kangra Valley’s Lifeline: Pathankot–Jogindernagar Train Set to Return After Two Years

After more than two years of silence on the tracks, the Pathankot–Jogindernagar narrow-gauge railway line is finally gearing up to welcome back direct train services next month. The long wait comes to an end with the completion of a brand-new bridge over the Chakki river, replacing the one swept away by flash floods in August 2022.

Since the collapse, only limited trains ran between Nurpur and Baijnath, but even those were halted this July when landslides near Ranital damaged a portion of the track. Now, with successful trials on the new bridge, the Railways is preparing to restore full connectivity — a move eagerly awaited by thousands of residents.

For the people of Kangra valley, this railway line is more than just transport; it’s a lifeline. Built between 1926 and 1928 during the British era, the 100-km stretch linked towns like Nurpur, Kangra, Palampur, Baijnath, and Jogindernagar, serving both locals and tourists. At its peak, seven trains ran daily across 33 stations, weaving together communities and religious centres.

While some stations such as Palampur and Paprola have seen upgrades under the Amrit Bharat scheme, many others remain neglected. NGOs and residents have repeatedly voiced concerns about the deteriorating condition of this historic track, urging authorities to act swiftly.

The revival of services is not just about nostalgia — it’s about reconnecting 40 lakh residents of Himachal’s lower hills to essential mobility. With talks of converting the line into broad gauge in the future, the upcoming resumption marks a hopeful new chapter for this engineering marvel of the past.
