Jagat Prakash Nadda has been appointed as the Health Minister

Former BJP president Jagat Prakash Nadda, from Bilaspur district in Himachal Pradesh, has been appointed as the Health Minister in the Modi government. Nadda previously held the position of Union Health Minister from 2014 to 2019. After becoming the national president of the BJP, he was not part of the government. His term as president ends in June, and he has now rejoined the Modi government in 2024. Nadda is the sole cabinet minister from Himachal Pradesh, which has four Lok Sabha constituencies. Born on December 2, 1960, in Patna, Bihar, his father was a professor at Patna University and Vice Chancellor of Ranchi University.

Nadda received his early education at St. Xavier’s School in Patna and earned a BA from Patna University. He then studied LLB at Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. In his youth, he was active in movements led by Jai Prakash Narayan and joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in Bihar in 1975. In 1983, he became the first president of the Vidyarthi Parishad at Himachal Pradesh University, representing ABVP. In 1989, he was elected National Minister of ABVP, and in 1991, he became President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. That same year, he married Dr. Mallika Nadda.

Nadda was first elected as an MLA from Bilaspur Sadar in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly in 1993 and served as Leader of the Opposition. He was re-elected in 1998 and became the Health Minister in the BJP government. After losing the 2003 assembly elections, he won again in 2007 and was appointed Minister of Forest, Environment, Science, and Technology in the state BJP government. In 2010, he resigned as minister due to differences with Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal and moved to Delhi, where he was appointed National General Secretary of the BJP. In April 2012, he became a Rajya Sabha member, and in 2013, he was reappointed as National General Secretary. From 2014 to 2019, he served as Minister of Health and Family Welfare. On June 17, 2019, Nadda was made the National Working President of the BJP, and on January 20, 2020, he was elected unopposed as the National President of the party.
