IIT Mandi Alumnus Paralympic Gold Medalist NiteshKumar to Lead Independence Day Celebrations

Underscoring the nation’s commitment to celebrating sporting
excellence and inclusivity, IIT Mandi is set to mark the 78th Independence Day with a high-
profile ceremony featuring its distinguished alumnus, Mr. Nitesh Kumar, distinguished
alumnus, Paralympic Gold Medalist, and Arjuna Awardee, who will grace the occasion as
the Chief Guest.
As a centre of higher education in the Himalayan region, IIT Mandi has been at the forefront
of promoting holistic development by integrating academics, sports, and social
responsibility into its student culture. In a special tribute to this vision, IIT Mandi will
inaugurate the Nitesh Kumar Pavilion at the Sports Complex, North Campus. Named in
honor of Mr. Kumar’s outstanding achievements in international sports and his enduring
association with the Institute, the pavilion will stand as a symbol of excellence,
perseverance, and inspiration for future generations.
Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign: Honoring the Nation’s Protectors
In alignment with the Government of India’s Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, IIT Mandi has
been actively engaged in community-oriented initiatives. Students from IIT Mandi
enthusiastically participated in quizzes, creative competitions, and the nationwide “Selfie
with Tiranga” initiative on the Government of India’s official portal.
On 12th August 2025, led by campaign Nodal Officer Dr. Ranjeet Kumar Jha, an IIT Mandi
delegation visited the Police Lines in Mandi to honor the exemplary and selfless service of
the police personnel. In the presence of the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mandi,
the team presented a formal letter of commendation from Prof. Laxmidhar Behera,
Director, IIT Mandi, and distributed personalized handwritten letters of appreciation from
students, faculty, and staff to each officer. The letters recognized their unwavering
commitment to safeguarding the region, especially in the face of natural disasters such as
landslides and floods.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Jha highlighted the extraordinary sacrifices made by the
police personnel, often foregoing precious time with their families to serve the people of

the Himalayan region. He commended their constant presence wherever disaster
management operations are required, whether clearing obstructions, ensuring the safety of
stranded travelers, or extending timely assistance, always rendering help without any
compulsion, and with an enduring spirit of service.
Tribute to the Armed Forces
As part of the campaign, students of IIT Mandi also visited the Yol Cantonment Army Camp,
where they presented letters of appreciation to Indian Army personnel, acknowledging
their sacrifices and dedication to the nation’s security.
