If we look at India’s data, 5 percent of the population is obese: Randeep
Obesity Outreach Programme was organised by Department of General Surgery, IGMC Shimla and Obesity Surgery Society of India at Atal Auditorium, Shimla.
On this occasion, a press conference was addressed by the patron of this institute, Dr. Randeep Wadhawan, organizing president Dr. Vivek Bindal and organizing secretary Dr. Puneet Mahajan, in which Dr. Randeep said that if we look at the data of India, then 5 percent of the population is obese and the population of our country is 1.4 billion, then according to 5 percent, 7 crore people are obese and similarly if we look at the diabetic people, then they are also around 7 crore people. It is definitely true that you people are lucky because the environment of Shimla is very good, plus you people walk a lot, so there is not so much obesity, but whether it is Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Kerala or Goa, obesity is very high in them. About 14% of the population in Himachal is in the grip of obesity, whose number would be around 10.50 lakhs. In this seminar it was told that surgery is not the only solution but there are multiple options like lifestyle management, diabetes medical treatment, treatment according to a pyramid and then there are surgical options as well and in surgical options also many new things have come like endoscopy and robotics so we are discussing everything today. He told that Obesity Surgery Society of India was formed 20 years ago, for almost 20 years it is the only society for obesity surgery treatment. Pan India we have roughly 600 members.
Dr Vivek Bindal said that one good thing is that obesity is low in Himachal right now. But it will increase because of the way bad food is available everywhere, the way chips and biscuits are available in packets of Rs 2-5 in every village and the children who go and buy the cheapest thing, it has been found that the number 1 choice of village children is packets of chips, number two is biscuits, and these prove to be very dangerous in the future. The third thing which is dangerous in our society is mobile screen time. Everyone is working on the screen of mobile phone and due to this physical activities have reduced. Our food and drink have become bad, due to which this program is going on here today, in which Obesity Society of India and Medical College Shimla together want to tell that we should tell ourselves and our children about a good lifestyle.
Principal of Indira Gandhi Medical College, Sita Thakur, MS Rahul Roy were also present in this program.
