Hydropower project workers are up in arms against the management

The hundreds of workers of the Sunni Hydro Project lodged protests against the management for violation of project norms.

The protest was held under the banner of a CITU unit of the Himachal Pradesh Building, Road and Other Construction Workers Union.

The workers did not join their duty for four hours in the morning and evening.  During this, the union had a two-hour-long meeting with the management on the ten-point demand letter of the union.

It was decided in the meeting that the process of implementing labor laws will start within the next two days and all labor laws will be implemented before December 28.

The union has warned that the agitation will intensify if the demands are not fulfilled soon. CITU State President Vijendra Mehra addressed the protest meeting and said that Labor laws are being openly violated.

Workers in the project are being paid less than the minimum wage.  Laborers are being made to work 18 hours a day.

They are not being given tunnel pay, holiday pay, or overtime pay.  They are not given safety equipment like gloves, shoes, helmets, masks, etc.  Workers are not being paid salaries for several months.

There is no record of his EPF.  They do not have proper facilities for accommodation, food, mess, canteen, toilets, bathrooms, transport facilities, holidays, registration under the Labor Welfare Board, etc.

The workers have been crammed like animals in containers instead of proper accommodation.  Dozens of laborers are being forced to live in each container.

They are not being given a salary as per the category.  Despite making them work 12 hours a day, they are being paid less than the minimum wage.

He has warned that if these demands are not fulfilled soon and labor laws are not implemented, the movement will intensify.  If management does not agree to end the alleged exploitation of workers they would go on strike and stop the project work.
