HPU Opens Admissions for 194 PhD Seats Under New 2025 Regulations

Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) has begun the online admission process for 194 PhD seats across 29 departments, inviting eligible candidates to apply by December 22 through the university’s official website.

This year’s admissions will be conducted under the newly revised PhD Regulations 2025, recently approved by the Academic Council. A major change in the rules is that there will be no entrance exam. Only candidates who have qualified CSIR‑UGC JRF or NET can apply.

Under the new merit-based system, 70 marks will be allotted to the NET score and 30 marks to the interview. The university has uploaded detailed eligibility criteria, instructions, and guidelines online for applicants.

Departments and Seat Distribution

According to the official notification, the highest number of seats are available in:

  • Law – 18
  • Chemistry – 17
  • English – 17
  • Education – 17

Other departments offering seats include Mathematics (12), Physical Education (15), Management (9), Biotechnology (8), Physics (8), Computer Science (7), Tourism (6), Hindi (6), Sanskrit (6), Public Administration (6), Microbiology (5), Forensic Science (5), Political Science (5), Economics (4), Geography (4), History (3), Commerce (3), Visual Arts (2), Sociology (2), Environmental Science (2), Botany (2), Zoology (2), Rural Development (1), Social Work (1), and Journalism & Mass Communication (1).

The university has also retained superannuation quota seats for children of HPU teachers and employees across various departments. All admissions will be offered in regular, full‑time mode.

Part-Time PhD Programme Coming in 2026

HPU is simultaneously working on launching part-time PhD programmes from 2026, in line with UGC guidelines. Officials said the rules for part-time admissions are expected to be finalised by March next year, after which the policy will be formally announced.
