How Farmers Can Keep Their Animals Safe and Healthy This Summer Advisory issued

As June rolls in with its scorching heat, livestock owners need to be extra cautious. The rising temperatures can take a toll on animals, increasing the risk of illness. To help farmers navigate this season, Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University, Palampur, along with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Sirmaur, has issued a practical advisory.

Stay Ahead of Summer Sickness

Dr. Pankaj Mittal from KVK Sirmaur explains that animals may suffer from fever, salt deficiency, loss of appetite, and reduced productivity during this time. Protect them from the harsh afternoon heat and dry winds. Always provide plenty of cool, clean water.

To prevent salt imbalances, mix the right amount of salt into their feed and water. Regularly check dung samples to keep worms at bay, and use deworming medicines as advised by a vet. Since parasites become more active in the heat, keep shelters clean and dry. If spraying insecticides, move animals out of the shed for a few hours.

Watch Out for These Regional Diseases

Certain diseases are more likely in specific areas:

  • Foot-and-Mouth Disease – Shimla and Kullu
  • Hemorrhagic Septicemia – Solan
  • Sheep and Goat Pox – Shimla and Mandi

Vaccinate animals over three months old, use antibiotics for infected ones, restrict movement, and follow biosecurity measures. Proper disposal of carcasses and regular vaccinations are key.

Caring for Poultry in the Heat

Hot weather can reduce egg production, feed intake, and even increase mortality in chickens. Ensure their feed is nutrient-rich and their coop is well-ventilated with fresh air.

Fish Farmers, Take Note

Oxygen levels in ponds can drop dangerously low in June, especially early in the morning. Add fresh water before sunrise or use aerators to maintain oxygen. If fish come to the surface or show signs of illness, improve water quality and stop extra feeding temporarily. You can also use nutrient-rich pond water for irrigating paddy fields.

Feed Right, Farm Smart

Dr. Mittal advises using well-decomposed organic manure like biogas slurry, vermicompost, or poultry manure at proper rates. Always feed fish with high-quality feed. For more tailored advice, farmers can contact their local KVK or the Agricultural Technology Information Centre at 01894-230395.
