Himachal Withdraws Disaster Management Act : Panchayat Elections Back on Track

After months of waiting, Himachal Pradesh is finally ready to bring back its village-level democracy. The state government has lifted restrictions under the Disaster Management Act, paving the way for Panchayati Raj elections that had been stalled for nearly six months.

Officials say road connectivity and administrative functioning have largely returned to normal, making it possible to restart the election process. With this green signal, preparations are now in full swing. Deputy Commissioners across districts have been instructed to begin the crucial roster determination exercise on March 20, wrapping it up by March 30. Final rosters will be released on March 31, ensuring that reservations for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, women, and newly created Panchayats are fairly allocated.

The stakes are high. The Supreme Court has directed the state to hold Panchayat elections before May 31, and the government has already announced the formation of 84 new Panchayats. This reshaping of boundaries makes the roster process especially important before the election schedule can be formally declared.

For villagers across Himachal, these elections are more than just a constitutional requirement — they are a chance to shape local governance, decide development priorities, and strengthen grassroots democracy. If all goes as planned, the official notification for elections could arrive by mid-April, setting the stage for a vibrant democratic exercise in the hills.
