Himachal Under Rain Siege: Red Alerts Issued as Monsoon Wreaks Havoc Across the State

As the monsoon continues to batter Himachal Pradesh, the Meteorological Center in Shimla has forecast persistent heavy rainfall until September 7, prompting red alerts in key districts including Una, Bilaspur, Kangra, Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur. Other regions like Hamirpur, Chamba, Kullu, Mandi, Kinnaur, and Lahaul-Spiti remain under orange alert, with shifting warnings over the coming days.

This year’s monsoon has already made history—August 2025 recorded the highest rainfall since 1949, with 431.3 mm, a staggering 68% above normal. Kangra topped the charts with 816.2 mm, while Lahaul-Spiti saw the least at 129.7 mm. Most districts, including Bilaspur, Chamba, Kinnaur, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Solan, and Una, have experienced above-normal rainfall.

Lives Lost and Homes Damaged: The Human Cost of Nature’s Fury

Between June 20 and August 31, the state has suffered property losses worth over ₹3,05,684 lakh. The toll on human life is heartbreaking—320 people have died, 379 injured, and 40 remain missing. Road accidents alone claimed 154 lives during this period. Landslides, cloudbursts, and floods have damaged 4,569 homes and shops, 3,710 cow shelters, and led to the death of 1,885 domestic animals.

Caution Urged as Rescue Operations Continue

Authorities are urging residents to stay alert and follow official advisories, as rescue and relief efforts continue across the state. Teams are working to restore roads, communication networks, and essential services, but the situation remains critical in many districts.
