Himachal to launch its first vehicle scrapping centers in Solan and Hamirpur

In a bid to enhance road safety and protect the environment, Himachal Pradesh is set to establish its first vehicle scrapping centers in Solan and Hamirpur. The state’s Transport Department has given initial approval to two companies to develop Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF) centers in these districts. These centers will play a crucial role in removing outdated and unfit vehicles, promoting sustainable practices and fostering the automobile industry’s growth.

The proposed facilities will be located at Plot No. 5, Industrial Area Banalgi in Solan, and VPO Gauna Karor, Tehsil Nadaun in Hamirpur. The companies have been authorized to begin setting up the infrastructure, with final operational licenses to be issued following inspections by authorities.

At present, Himachal Pradesh lacks dedicated scrapping centers, forcing vehicle owners to seek such services in neighboring states, which often results in higher costs. The introduction of these centers will make the scrapping process more affordable and convenient for residents. Furthermore, the state plans to extend this initiative to all districts in the future, ensuring accessibility across Himachal Pradesh.

This development aligns with the government’s broader agenda to retire 15-year-old diesel and petrol vehicles owned by public departments, aiming to reduce pollution and enhance safety. According to amendments made by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in January 2023, the registration certificates of such vehicles were canceled as of March 31, 2023. The policy will also apply to government vehicles as they reach the 15-year threshold.

Once operational, these RVSF centers will streamline the disposal of outdated vehicles, helping Himachal Pradesh address the growing challenge of unsafe and environmentally harmful automobiles.
