Himachal Rolls Out RFID enabled Digital Him Bus Card to Streamline Travel Concessions

In a major leap toward modernizing public transport, the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) has introduced the RFID-enabled Him Bus Card—a smart solution designed to bring transparency and efficiency to free and concessional travel across the state’s bus network.

A Smarter Way to Ride
The Him Bus Card is now mandatory for anyone seeking discounted or free travel on HRTC buses. Without it, passengers will need to pay the full fare. The initiative, led by HRTC Managing Director Dr. Nipun Jindal, aims to eliminate misuse and simplify verification, making travel smoother for both commuters and conductors.

How to Get Your Him Bus Card
Eligible individuals can apply online via the HRTC portal. First, users must create a HIMACCESS ID by registering under the “Signup for Citizen Login” option. All payments are processed digitally, ensuring a paperless and hassle-free experience.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the costs:

  • First-Year Fee: ₹200 + GST (includes concession)
  • Annual Renewal (from Year 2): ₹150 + GST
  • Replacement for Lost/Damaged Card: ₹200
  • Home Delivery Option: ₹56 extra (postal charges)

Cards can be picked up from designated HRTC counters or delivered to your doorstep for a small fee.

Who’s Eligible?
The Him Bus Card covers a wide range of beneficiaries:

  • Students: From schoolchildren to university students
  • Government Employees: State and central staff, police, jail officials, and security personnel
  • Honorees: Former MLAs/MPs, freedom fighters and their spouses, accredited journalists, gallantry awardees, Veer Naris, and award-winning teachers and children
  • Others: Specially-abled individuals, widows of HRTC employees, women, and leprosy patients

A Step Toward Digital Governance
HRTC officials say the new system will help track usage accurately, reduce manual paperwork, and ensure timely renewals. It’s part of a broader push by the Himachal Pradesh government to embrace e-governance and improve public service delivery.

As the Him Bus Card rolls out, it promises to make travel more accountable, inclusive, and tech-savvy—bringing Himachal’s scenic journeys into the digital age.
