Himachal Braces for Rain, Snowfall, and Thunderstorms: IMD Issues Orange Alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted a spell of wet weather across Himachal Pradesh, with light to moderate rain and snowfall expected in several regions from April 18 to 20. The plains are also likely to receive rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds gusting up to 40–50 km/h.
Heavy Showers and Snowfall Expected in Higher Regions
The IMD’s Shimla office predicts isolated heavy rainfall and snowfall in mid and high-altitude areas, particularly in Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, and the upper reaches of Chamba and Kullu districts. Meanwhile, Kangra, Shimla, Mandi, and parts of Chamba and Kullu may experience light to moderate rain with occasional intense spells.
Tourist hotspots across the state could see intermittent light showers, with some areas receiving moderate rainfall. The IMD has issued an orange alert for heavy rain in Chamba, Kangra, and Kullu on April 18-19, and in Mandi on April 19. Additionally, hailstorms may occur in isolated parts of Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla during this period.
Temperature Drop Expected
The weather system is likely to bring a 5-7°C drop in maximum temperatures across many parts of the state from April 18-20, followed by a slight rise of 4-5°C in some regions. Night temperatures, however, may increase by 3-4°C till April 20 before dipping again by 2-3°C in certain areas.

With thunderstorms and gusty winds predicted, residents and travelers are advised to:

- Avoid trekking or venturing into high-altitude areas during heavy snowfall or rain.
