Himachal on Alert: Heavy Rain and Snowfall Expected on February 20

The Meteorological Department has issued an Orange Alert for the districts of Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi, warning of heavy rain and snowfall on February 20, 2025. A Western Disturbance moving east-northeastward is expected to bring widespread precipitation across the state from the midnight of February 19 to the forenoon of February 21, according to a recent weather bulletin.

Snowfall in Tourist Hotspots

Popular hill destinations, including Kufri, Narkanda, Manali, Solang Valley, Dalhousie, and Sissu, are likely to witness moderate snowfall, while Shimla and its surrounding areas may receive light snowfall. Additionally, Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, and the higher reaches of Kangra, Chamba, Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, and Sirmaur may experience light to moderate snowfall.

Rain, Thunderstorms, and Temperature Fluctuations

  • Heavy snowfall is predicted in isolated areas of Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi on February 20.
  • Lower-altitude districts such as Solan, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, and Una are expected to receive light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
  • The maximum temperature is likely to drop by 6-7°C on February 20, followed by a rise of 4-5°C on February 21 and 22.
  • Minimum temperatures may increase by 3-4°C on February 20, only to drop again in the following days.

Advisory for Residents and Travelers

The forecasted weather conditions may lead to slippery roads, low visibility, traffic congestion, and possible disruption of essential services. Residents and tourists are advised to drive carefully, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay updated with government advisories.

Additionally, the Meteorological Department has issued a Yellow Alert for thunderstorms and lightning in the lower and mid-hill regions on February 20. Those in affected areas are urged to take necessary precautions.
