Himachal Faces 73% Rainfall Deficit in January, Farmers Pin Hopes on Upcoming Showers

Himachal Pradesh has experienced a staggering 73% deficit in rainfall during the first three weeks of January 2025. Against the expected average of 54 mm, the state received a mere 14.7 mm of rain between January 1 and 22, according to data from the Meteorological Department.

The dry spell has hit several districts hard, with Una suffering a 93% rainfall deficit, followed by Bilaspur and Hamirpur at 91% each. Kangra recorded a 90% shortfall, while Kinnaur and Solan saw deficits of 88% and 87%, respectively. Other areas, including Shimla, Mandi, and Sirmaur, also reported significant reductions in rainfall, exacerbating concerns for farmers and fruit growers.

Winter precipitation is critical for maintaining soil moisture and ensuring a good growing season. Farmers and apple growers across the state are now grappling with the impact of inadequate rainfall and snowfall, which has left their crops and orchards vulnerable. Many are anxiously awaiting a change in weather, as their livelihoods depend on it.

The Meteorological Center in Shimla has forecasted a weather shift beginning on the night of January 22. Light to moderate rain and snowfall are expected in various parts of the state, with higher-altitude areas such as Shimla, Kinnaur, and Lahaul-Spiti likely to receive light snowfall. Moderate snowfall is predicted in the upper reaches of Sirmaur and Kullu districts, while districts like Solan, Mandi, and Sirmaur may receive rain.

Tourist hotspots, including Manali, Kufri, Narkanda, and Solang Valley, are also expected to witness light snowfall, offering a silver lining for the tourism industry. However, experts caution that the upcoming precipitation might only partially mitigate the rainfall deficit.

The weather is predicted to clear between January 24 and 28, providing temporary relief. As the state waits for much-needed showers, the agricultural and tourism sectors remain hopeful for a more favorable season ahead.
