Himachal Endures Record-Breaking Heatwave, Una Hits 46 Degrees Celsius

Himachal Pradesh is experiencing an intense heatwave, with Una reaching an unprecedented 46 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, surpassing the previous all-time high of 45.2 degrees set on May 23, 2013, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

Shimla, known for its cool and pleasant weather, also felt the heatwave’s impact, recording a temperature of 31.7 degrees. Although this is below its highest-ever temperature of 32.4 degrees recorded on May 27, 2010, it still represents a significant rise for the region. The soaring temperatures reflect the widespread heatwave conditions affecting the state.

Other regions in Himachal Pradesh have reported unusually high temperatures. Bilaspur recorded a scorching 44 degrees, while Hamirpur reached 43.7 degrees. Dhaula Kuan in Sirmour district saw the mercury hit 43.2 degrees. Another reading in Hamirpur showed 42.8 degrees, highlighting the uniformity of the heatwave’s impact. Berthin in Bilaspur reported 42.4 degrees, Mandi 42.2 degrees, and Kangra 41.6 degrees. Even Sundernagar experienced a high of 40.5 degrees.

Areas typically known for cooler climates, such as Dharamshala and Solan, saw temperatures soar to 37.7 degrees and 37.2 degrees, respectively. Jubberhati Airport registered 36.5 degrees, contributing to the overall picture of a state engulfed in heat.

Tourist resorts, usually a respite from the heat, are also experiencing higher temperatures. Dalhousie, a popular hill station, recorded 28.2 degrees. Kufri and Narkanda, other favored destinations, reported temperatures of 25.8 degrees and 25.6 degrees, respectively. In higher altitudes, Keylong recorded 19.9 degrees, Kalpa 25.3 degrees, and Tabo 20.2 degrees.

Amidst the sweltering conditions, there is positive news for travelers and locals. The district administration has confirmed the reopening of Kunzum Pass after being closed for six months due to snow. This reopening reconnects the Spiti Valley with Manali and Lahaul after a gap of five months, providing crucial access for residents and tourists to the stunning landscapes of the Spiti Valley.

The extreme temperatures in Himachal Pradesh are a stark reminder of the changing climatic patterns affecting the region. The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely, issuing advisories to help residents cope with the heatwave. With temperatures reaching record highs, the state is on alert, and authorities are urging people to stay hydrated and avoid unnecessary sun exposure during peak hours.
