Himachal braces for snowfall ahead of New Year: IMD forecasts Western Disturbance impact

Himachal Pradesh is likely to transform into a winter wonderland just before the New Year, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting snowfall due to an intense Western Disturbance set to impact Northwest India from the night of December 26, 2024.

According to the IMD, the weather system will create cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan and its neighboring areas by December 27, fueled by the interaction of easterly winds at lower levels. This will bring significant moisture from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, resulting in widespread precipitation until December 28.

The Western Himalayan region, including Himachal Pradesh, can expect light to moderate snowfall during December 26–28, with peak activity predicted for December 27 and 28. Higher altitudes are likely to witness significant snowfall, enhancing the region’s winter charm.

Rain and Thunderstorms Predicted for Plains

In addition to Himachal Pradesh, parts of the plains in northwest and central India may experience scattered to widespread rainfall. Regions like East Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh-Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh could also witness thunderstorms with gusty winds on December 27 and 28.

Drop in Temperatures and Cold Wave Alert

In Himachal Pradesh, temperatures are predicted to remain stable for the next two days before dropping by 2–3°C in some areas between December 27 and 29. Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions are likely in the lower hills and plains, accompanied by frost during early mornings. Dense fog is also expected in specific areas, such as around Bhakra Dam in Bilaspur and the Balh Valley in Mandi, during late-night and early morning hours on December 24 and 25.

Advisory for Residents and Travelers

The IMD has urged residents and visitors to prepare for harsh weather conditions and take precautions, especially in areas prone to snow and frost. The anticipated snowfall promises to add a festive charm to Himachal Pradesh, offering a picturesque winter backdrop for holidaymakers as the year draws to a close.
