Himachal Braces for a Rainy Monsoon: Relief for Farmers, But Risks Loom
Himachal Pradesh is set to receive a generous dose of rainfall this monsoon season, with the Meteorological Department forecasting above-normal showers between June and September. The state could see over 109% of its usual rainfall, which averages 734.4 mm based on long-term data.
June is expected to kick off the season with a wetter-than-usual start. While this is welcome news for farmers and water reservoirs, the MeT Department has also issued a word of caution. Heavier rains can bring challenges like flooding, transport disruptions, health risks, and environmental damage.
To prepare, authorities are being urged to strengthen infrastructure, make use of early warning systems, and improve disaster response in vulnerable areas.
This forecast comes on the heels of a dry spell. Himachal received 27% less rainfall than normal during the pre-monsoon period (March to May), marking the 39th driest season since 1901. Some districts like Sirmaur and Solan saw heavy rain, but others—especially Chamba, Lahaul-Spiti, and Kinnaur—were left parched.
Looking ahead, light to moderate rain is expected across the state between June 2 and 6, especially in the higher reaches. Temperatures are likely to remain steady for a few days before gradually rising by 2 to 4°C.
As the monsoon approaches, the state stands at a crossroads—balancing the promise of replenished fields with the need to stay alert and prepared for nature’s unpredictability.
