Heavy rains disrupt Himachal, more than 60 roads blocked

Himachal Pradesh continues to grapple with the aftermath of heavy rains and landslides, leaving more than 60 roads closed across the state. Despite these disruptions, the region has seen 21% less rainfall than usual this monsoon season, offering a mixed bag of challenges for residents.

In many districts, people are still dealing with the inconvenience caused by blocked roads, with no immediate relief in sight. According to reports from the State Emergency Operation Center (SEOC), over 60 roads remain obstructed due to the recent rains and landslides, affecting daily life.

The SEOC has provided further details on the affected regions. Mandi district alone accounts for 31 road closures, while 13 roads are blocked in Shimla and Mandi each. Kangra is dealing with 10 closures, Kinnaur has four, Kullu has two, and Una, Sirmaur, and Lahaul-Spiti each face one road closure. Notably, National Highway 5, a key route in the region, is blocked near Nigulsari in Kinnaur. Power supply lines and water systems have also taken a hit, with 11 electricity connections and one water supply scheme currently disrupted.

Moderate rains have continued to pour in various parts of the state since Saturday evening. Una recorded the highest rainfall at 48 mm, followed by 19.8 mm in Kufri, 17.2 mm in Sangla, and smaller amounts in other regions like Jubbarhatti, Mandi, and Kalpa.

Interestingly, while the current rains have caused significant damage, the state has actually recorded 21% less rainfall this monsoon season. Since the onset of monsoon on June 27, Himachal has received only 522.2 mm of rain, compared to the usual 657.9 mm. The impact of this deficit has been devastating in other ways. From June 27 to September 7, rain-related incidents have claimed 158 lives, while 30 people are still missing. The economic toll has also been severe, with officials estimating losses amounting to ₹1,305 crores.

The state continues to deal with the aftermath of these natural calamities, as authorities work to restore road connectivity and services, and hope for better days ahead.
