Harnessing Himalayan Bioresources: CSIR-IHBT Brings Farmers, Scientists, and Industry Together
On 10 April 2026, the CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT), Palampur hosted a one-day workshop titled “Bioeconomy from the Himalayas: Linking Labs, Land and Industry.” The event brought together farmers, scientists, industrialists, and experts on a common platform to explore how Himalayan bioresources can fuel sustainable growth.
Welcoming dignitaries and guests, Dr. Sudesh Kumar Yadav, Director of CSIR-IHBT, highlighted the institute’s mission programs that directly benefit communities and contribute to the region’s bioeconomy.
The workshop featured distinguished speakers:
- Dr. Shiv Kumar Sharma, National Organising Secretary, Vijnana Bharati, as Chief Guest, who spoke about revitalizing India’s heritage and outreach.
- Dr. Som Dev Bharadwaj, Former Head of Research Unit, Cancer Hospital & Research Division, Gwalior, who emphasized reconnecting with nature for environmental consciousness.
- Dr. Narmada Prasad Shukla, Former Chairman, MP Pollution Control Board, who stressed the urgency of conserving biodiversity and tackling climate change.
The day also marked significant collaborations:
- An MoU under the Smart Village Mission with CNG Agro Care Pvt. Ltd., Kolkata.
- Two material transfer agreements with Nishant Biotech, Bilaspur.
- Two technology transfer agreements with Indiyum Foods Pvt. Ltd. and Bhikhta Biotech, Shimla.
Adding to the occasion, a brochure on the Rose Scented Geranium variety was released, and aromatic marigold seeds were distributed to farmers. An exhibition showcased bio-based technologies developed by IHBT, offering participants hands-on insights.
With over 150 participants, the workshop became a vibrant forum for dialogue, innovation, and collaboration—underscoring how science, industry, and farming communities can work hand in hand to build a resilient Himalayan bioeconomy.
