Grief in Balh: Three Schoolgirls Drown in Ravine, Community Mourns Tragic Loss

A quiet afternoon in Balh Panchayat turned into a heartbreaking tragedy on Thursday, as three young schoolgirls lost their lives after drowning in a ravine near their village in the Bangana development block.

Khushi, Komal, and Sonakshi—students of Government School, Sanhal, studying in classes VII and VIII—had ventured near the ravine but didn’t return home by evening. Alarmed, their families began searching and soon found a slipper near the water’s edge. Moments later, villagers spotted two bodies floating in the ravine. All three girls were pulled out and rushed to the Community Health Centre in Thanakalan, but doctors could only confirm the worst—they had already passed away.

Eyewitnesses believe one of the girls may have slipped into the water, prompting the others to jump in to help. Tragically, none of them could swim, and the deep waters claimed all three.

The victims were identified as Khushi, daughter of Manjeet Ram—a local driver—and Komal and Sonakshi, daughters of Ajay Kumar from Lidkot village. The loss has left the community in shock, with grieving families and neighbors struggling to come to terms with the sudden and devastating accident.

The bodies were sent to the district hospital for post-mortem, but the emotional wounds left behind will take far longer to heal. In Balh, the memory of three bright young lives lost too soon now hangs heavy in the air.
