From Patwaris to Portals: Himachal’s Leap into Digital Land Ownership
Himachal Pradesh is rewriting the rulebook on land ownership—digitally. In a bold stride toward tech-driven governance, the state has launched a fully online land registration and transfer system, allowing citizens to handle property transactions without stepping foot in a government office.
At the heart of this transformation is the “My Deed” portal, a paperless platform that blends digital signatures and video conferencing to make land dealings secure, simple, and accessible. Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi calls it a game-changer: “We’ve implemented rules to enable online land transfers, and soon, the entire process will be digitised.”
A Digital Milestone
With over 500 registrations already completed online, the portal is gaining traction fast. Revenue officials—Patwaris and Kanungos included—have undergone training to adapt to the new system, which not only empowers citizens but also lightens the administrative load. No More Queues, Just Clicks
Residents can now upload key documents like Jamabandi and annual averages directly to the portal, cutting out the need for in-person visits. While internet connectivity hiccups in some districts have posed challenges, the government is actively resolving them and even exploring satellite-based backups to ensure smooth access.
A Model for the Nation
Negi believes Himachal’s digital push could inspire other states: “We’re making governance more transparent and efficient. This is the future.” As the hills embrace high-tech, the rest of India may soon follow suit—one click at a time.
