Former Governor Shri Bhagat Singh Koshyari Addresses Valedictory Session of National Seminar at IIAS, Shimla

The Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), Shimla, today hosted the Valedictory Session of its Three-Day National Seminar on “Guru Parampara and Indian Knowledge Tradition”, featuring an inspiring Valedictory Address by Hon’ble Chief Guest Shri Bhagat Singh Koshyari, Former Governor of Maharashtra and Goa and Former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand.

In his keynote valedictory address, Shri Koshyari ji emphasized the enduring significance of India’s Guru-Shishya Parampara, describing it as the foundation of Indian knowledge traditions and a moral compass for contemporary society. He urged for a seamless integration of spiritual values with modern education, stressing that “educational institutions must combine spirituality and science for holistic human development.”
Highlighting the ideal of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, he called on scholars and youth to see the world as one family and to revive India’s civilizational wisdom in today’s context. His address, both profound and practical, was received with great appreciation, offering clear guidance for educators, policymakers, and students alike.

Prof. K. Gopinathan Pillai, Fellow, IIAS and Convener of the Seminar, presented a detailed Three-Day Seminar Report, summarizing the rich discussions on the historical evolution of Guru Parampara, its role in social reform, and the methodologies that can help harmonize traditional wisdom with modern educational frameworks.

Prof. ShashiPrabha Kumar, Chairperson of IIAS (joining virtually), delivered the Chair’s Address, underscoring the philosophical foundations of the Guru tradition and its potential for fostering ethical, culturally aware citizens in India’s pluralistic society.

In his Vote of Thanks, Shri Mehar Chand Negi expressed heartfelt gratitude to Shri Koshyari, the Chairperson, distinguished scholars, participants, and the dedicated organizing team whose collective efforts ensured the seminar’s success.

The session formally moderated by Shri Akhilesh Pathak, Sales and Public Relations Officer, IIAS, who welcomed the dignitaries and reflected on the seminar’s academic journey. The event concluded with the National Anthem.

The Three-Day National Seminar, held from June 25 to 27, 2025, featured academic sessions and roundtable discussions exploring themes such as the methodologies of ancient Rishis, cultural creativity, social awakening, and strategies for blending traditional and modern education. The seminar reaffirmed IIAS Shimla’s role as a premier national forum for advanced study and critical reflection on India’s rich civilizational heritage.
