Farmers should get their wheat and barley crops insured by December 15 : Negi

Under the Prime Minister’s Crop Insurance Scheme 2025-26, farmers in Shimla district can insure their wheat and barley crops for the Rabi season until December 15. Dr. Ajab Negi, Deputy Director of Agriculture, Shimla, said that under this scheme, farmers will have to pay a premium of Rs. 900 per hectare or Rs. 72 per bigha for wheat and Rs. 750 per hectare or Rs. 60 per bigha for barley.
He explained that under the Prime Minister’s Crop Insurance Scheme, the total insured amount for wheat crops is ₹60,000 per hectare and for barley crops, ₹50,000 per hectare. He added that farmers can insure their crops through banks, Lok Mitra Kendras, or online, for which they must submit their Aadhaar card, land documents, and crop certificate.
He informed that the Agricultural Insurance Company (AIC) has been entrusted with the task of crop insurance in Shimla district. He added that farmers who have taken out loans from banks will automatically have their crops insured. If indebted farmers do not wish to insure their crops, they will need to submit a declaration to the bank stating their refusal.
The Deputy Director stated that under the Restructured Weather-Based Crop Insurance Scheme, farmers can insure their Rabi cash crops, such as potatoes and garlic. The deadline is December 31st for potatoes and December 14th for garlic. Under this insurance scheme, farmers will only have to pay 5 percent of the insured amount. The remaining premium is shared between the central and state governments in a 90:10 ratio. The insured amount is set at ₹125,000 per hectare for potatoes and ₹200,000 per hectare for garlic. He stated that farmers from Chaupal and Kupvi have been authorized for garlic, and those from Theog, Mashobra, and Chaupal for potatoes.
