Fake wedding invitations: Cybercriminals targeting Himachal residents

Cybercriminals in Himachal Pradesh have devised a new method to scam people by sending fake digital wedding invitations. These invitations contain hidden malware that, when downloaded, compromises the user’s personal information and provides scammers access to bank accounts. As this scam continues to spread, the police have issued a public advisory to alert citizens about the threat.

The Modus Operandi

Scammers are disguising malicious files as digital wedding cards. Once downloaded, the malware infiltrates the phone’s security system, allowing fraudsters to steal sensitive information like banking details. These scams often rely on APK files, which can bypass the phone’s defenses and extract critical data.

Understanding Malware

Malware is harmful software designed to damage or hack devices. It can slow down your phone, disrupt app functionality, and delete files without warning. More critically, it can steal sensitive information such as passwords, banking details, and other personal data, putting users at significant risk.

Police Advisory for Public Safety

ASP Cyber Crime Narveer Rathore has urged residents to remain cautious. He advised against opening or downloading digital wedding invitations or any unknown files sent from unfamiliar numbers. Such files often contain malware that can jeopardize personal security. Residents are encouraged to keep their phones secure and download files only from trusted sources.

How to Stay Protected

Avoid Suspicious Links: Do not open links or download files from unknown numbers or unverified sources.

Verify the Sender: Always ensure that messages and files come from a credible source before interacting with them.

Be Proactive: Maintain updated security measures on your devices to protect against malware and other threats.

By staying alert and following these guidelines, citizens can protect their personal data and finances from cybercriminals. Awareness and caution are the best defenses against these evolving online scams.
