Shimla Sets Transport Rates to Protect Growers During Peak Season

As apple harvesting hits its peak in Shimla district, the local administration has stepped in to ensure that fruit growers aren’t burdened by unfair transport charges. Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap has officially announced the 2025 transport rates for moving apple boxes, aiming to bring transparency and protect farmers from exploitation.

The move comes amid long-standing concerns about overcharging and cartel-like behavior by some transport unions during the high-pressure harvest season. The administration has made it clear: anyone found charging above the fixed rates will face strict legal action.

Here’s What Farmers Need to Know About the New Rates:

  • To Delhi (Heavy Trucks): ₹0.90 per quintal/km
  • To Chandigarh (Heavy Trucks): ₹1.30 per quintal/km
  • Pick-up Vehicles (4-wheelers):
    • ₹2.30 per quintal/km for up to 20 km
    • ₹2.50 per quintal/km for distances beyond 20 km
  • Eicher Vehicles (e.g., Tata 407): ₹1.30 per quintal/km

These rates are designed to regulate transport costs during the crucial harvesting and marketing period, ensuring that orchardists—many of whom rely on rented vehicles—aren’t forced to pay arbitrary or inflated prices.

Protecting Farmer Interests

The Deputy Commissioner emphasized that any violation, including coercive pricing or unauthorized charges, will be dealt with under the law. Farmers and commission agents are encouraged to report any overcharging and retain transport bills and payment proofs to support their claims.

Shimla plays a vital role in Himachal Pradesh’s apple economy, with lakhs of apple boxes transported each season to markets across North India. This initiative is a step toward fair trade practices, helping farmers retain more of their hard-earned income.
