Excitement Builds for the 52nd Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Memorial Tournament at CSIR-IHBT
The CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT) in Palampur is all set to host the 52nd Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Memorial Tournament (SSBMT) from February 7th to 10th, 2025. This prestigious event, organized by the CSIR Sports Promotion Board, is a highlight in the CSIR calendar, bringing together teams from various CSIR laboratories across India.
Outdoor competitions in volleyball and cricket will be the main attractions of this year’s tournament. Sixteen teams from CSIR laboratories, including CSIR-CCMB Hyderabad, CSIR-CDRI Lucknow, and CSIR-NAL Bengaluru, have qualified through zonal events and will compete for the top honors. Additionally, a women’s cricket match will be a special feature of the tournament.
Dr. Sudesh Kumar Yadav, Director of CSIR-IHBT, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “All preparations are complete, and I am eagerly looking forward to welcoming the participants. I am confident that they will enjoy every moment with true game spirit.”
The tournament honors the legacy of Shri Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (1894–1955), a pioneering scientist and the first Director of CSIR. The event aims to foster unity, promote team spirit and leadership skills, and encourage outstanding performance within the CSIR community. Initially organized by CSIR headquarters, the tournament has evolved into a biennial Pan-India sports event, hosted by different CSIR laboratories, inspiring enthusiasm and participation in sports among scientists.
The inaugural program of the SSBMT (outdoor) finals will be held at the CSIR-IHBT premises on February 6th, 2025.
