Cracking Down on Encroachments: Solan Bypass First in Line for Cleanup
In a decisive move to tackle unauthorized encroachments, the administration has launched a campaign to clear National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) land, starting with the Solan bypass. On Thursday, notices were issued to families living in huts on NHAI property, giving them 15 days to vacate. Revenue Department officials pasted these notices on the walls of the huts, warning of stringent action if the deadline is ignored.
In a parallel effort, a private school near the bypass has also been served a notice for encroaching on 400 square meters of government land. The notice, affixed to the school gate, followed detailed measurements conducted by authorities. This initiative is being led by SDM Solan, supported by a team comprising representatives from NHAI, the Revenue Department, the Municipal Corporation, and the Police. Acting on public complaints, the team surveyed areas near Gurukul and DAV schools on Wednesday, confirming significant encroachments.
Highway Encroachments: A Widespread Concern
Encroachments on highways are a growing issue in Himachal Pradesh, particularly along NHAI land, where thousands of temporary shacks and shops have cropped up over the years. Often set up by migrant workers, these makeshift establishments sell items like fruits and toys, gradually transforming into permanent structures.
Over time, occupants seek access to utilities such as electricity and construct permanent buildings, making it increasingly challenging for authorities to reclaim the land. Such encroachments not only consume public land but also create serious traffic hazards. Vehicles parked near these shanty shops obstruct the flow of traffic, causing congestion and endangering commuters.
Sustained Efforts Needed for Long-Term Impact
The lack of timely action by the NHAI, Public Works Department (PWD), and local administration has allowed these issues to proliferate. While the ongoing crackdown is a positive step, experts highlight the importance of regular monitoring and stricter enforcement to prevent future encroachments. Addressing these challenges is crucial for safeguarding public safety and ensuring the smooth functioning of critical infrastructure like national highways.
The campaign’s success in Solan could serve as a blueprint for tackling encroachments across other parts of the state, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to restoring order and protecting public assets.
