Congress will launch campaign against weakening of MNREGA : Pratibha
Former MP, All India Congress Committee member, and former state president Pratibha Singh has said that the Congress will launch a public awareness campaign in rural areas of the state against the removal of the name of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi from MNREGA and the weakening of its original form. She said that at the Congress Working Committee meeting, Congress leaders in all states have been asked to launch a major movement against this.
Pratibha Singh has said that she will soon start this campaign in the state by extensively touring the rural areas of the state.
Pratibha Singh accused the Modi government at the center of weakening this law, not only undermining the right to work for rural people, but also insulting the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, by changing its name. She said that the then Manmohan Singh government, under the guidance of UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, had legalized this ambitious scheme, guaranteeing rural development and 100 days of employment for unemployed people. This scheme provided rural people with easy access to employment at their doorsteps through their village panchayats and also accelerated development in rural areas. Now, under the new law, the central government has taken full control of this scheme, effectively abrogating the authority of village panchayats. She said that by raising awareness of people’s rights, Congress will raise awareness across the country and force the central government to restore it to its original form.
Shimla, September 9: State Congress President and former MP Pratibha Singh, while reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the disaster-affected areas, said that all the expectations the state had from the Prime Minister remained unfulfilled.
Pratibha Singh stated that the state’s losses have been estimated to exceed ₹5,000 crore (US$1.5 billion). The aid of ₹1,500 crore (US$1.5 billion) is woefully inadequate. She added that the Prime Minister, who calls Himachal Pradesh his “second home,” should provide full support. She urged the Prime Minister to provide financial assistance to the state, as requested by the state government, for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of disaster-affected areas.
