College Teachers in Himachal Pradesh Get Green Signal to Guide PhD Scholars

In a move welcomed by the academic community, Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), Shimla has opened the doors for college teachers to supervise PhD scholars. The landmark decision, approved by the university’s Executive Council and endorsed by Vice-Chancellor Mahavir Singh, is being seen as a step toward strengthening research culture across the state.

Dean of Studies, BK Shivram, shared that applications have already been invited from interested college teachers who wish to be recognized as PhD supervisors. However, he emphasized that eligibility will strictly follow UGC guidelines, ensuring quality and credibility in research mentorship.

To streamline the process, all applications must be verified by the respective college principals and the Directorate of Higher Education. Once approved, the university will allocate PhD scholars based on vacancies, laboratory facilities, and infrastructure available in each subject.

Calling it a “long-pending demand,” Shivram highlighted that this initiative reflects the university’s commitment to expanding research opportunities under the visionary leadership of the Vice-Chancellor. For many college teachers, this marks a new chapter—one where their expertise can directly shape the next generation of researchers.
