China Earthquake : Kargil epicentre, tremors felt in North India
The Shimla Meteorological Office issued a press statement on Monday reporting that the tricity region of Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula, along with the Northern and Western Himalayan states, experienced three earthquakes with a magnitude exceeding 5. The tremors occurred at 10:58 hrs, 15:48 hrs, and 18:18 hrs.
The second tremor, recorded around 15:48 hrs on Monday, affected various parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and the tricities. The impact extended to some areas in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, with its epicenter identified in the Kargil hills at an altitude of 2675 meters in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, in the northwestern part of India. The three tremors occurred at 10:58, 15:48, and 18:18.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the magnitude was measured at 5.7 on the Richter scale, with the epicenter’s latitude recorded at 33.46 and longitude at 71.76, with a depth of ten kilometers. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties or property damage in Himachal Pradesh. The impact was felt by residents along the Chamba and Lahaul Spiti border, extending to Leh and Ladakh.
The primary consequences of the tremors were experienced in sparsely populated areas of the region.
