Central Zoo Authority gives the nod to establish a large Zoo in Himachal

Himachal Pradesh Receives Prior Approval from the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) for the establishment of a Large Zoo in the state. 

In a press release issued here today, DFO publicity Shimla said that this significant milestone marks a momentous step towards enriching wildlife conservation efforts and enhancing the tourism experience in the region.

The establishment of a Large Zoo at Bankhandi in Kangra district is one of the dream projects of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu as a part of a grand scheme to make Kangra the State’s “Tourism Capital”. 

The state government in collaboration with wildlife experts and conservationists, has dedicatedly worked on this proposal, ensuring it adheres to the highest standards of animal welfare, safety, and environmental sustainability. 

The establishment of the Large Zoo is expected to boost tourism, create employment opportunities, and contribute to the socio-economic development of the region.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (HoFF), Himachal Pradesh Rajiv Kumar said that the proposal for the establishment of the Large Zoo underwent a thorough 

evaluation during the 108th Technical Committee meeting of the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) convened in June 2023.

 After careful consideration and scrutiny, the committee recommended granting approval for the establishment of the Large 

Zoo in Himachal Pradesh, highlighting the immense potential it holds in promoting wildlife preservation and education. 

This Large Zoo is envisioned to be a world-class facility that would house a diverse range of animal species native to Himachal  Pradesh and other regions. 

It would serve as an exceptional platform for visitors to engage with wildlife, observe their natural behaviors, and develop a deeper understanding of their ecological significance.

Through various exhibits and interactive programs, the Large Zoo aims to raise awareness about wildlife  conservation and the importance of protecting natural habitats.

He further said that as the approval is granted, the Wildlife wing of HP Forest  Department will work towards fulfilling the necessary conditions outlined by the Expert Group on Zoo Designing during their 108th meeting held on June 21st, 2023.

 This ensures that the Large Zoo is established and operated in strict compliance with the highest ethical and conservation standards.
