Celebrating Women in Science: CSIR-IHBT Marks National Science Day with Innovation and Inspiration

The CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT) came alive with energy and pride as it celebrated National Science Day on March 6, 2026, under the theme “Women in Science: Catalyzing Viksit Bharat.” The day honors the groundbreaking discovery of the Raman Effect by Nobel Laureate Sir C.V. Raman, reminding everyone of the power of curiosity and scientific pursuit.

Welcoming the gathering, Dr. Sudesh Kumar Yadav, Director of CSIR-IHBT, highlighted the institute’s recent strides in bio-economy and livelihood improvement. He pointed to success stories from the Floriculture and Aroma missions, stressing that science must serve society and meet national needs. He also praised initiatives like Jigyasa and skill development programs that empower youth and contribute to building a stronger Bharat.

The event was graced by Dr. Shekar C. Mande, President of the Indian National Science Academy, who underscored the importance of indigenous technologies for inclusive growth. He narrated the story of the Raman Effect in an engaging way, reminding everyone that curiosity is the true driving force of science.

Dr. Sudhir Sopory, Senior Emeritus Scientist, encouraged collaboration and teamwork to meet the challenges of changing times, while Dr. Sridevi Annapurna Singh delivered a thought-provoking lecture on food and nutritional security. She emphasized the pivotal role of women in science and paid tribute to pioneers like Dr. Kamala Sohonie, the first Indian woman to earn a PhD in science.

The celebrations also marked several milestones:

  • Six technology transfer agreements with industry partners across India.
  • An MoU with Chitkara University for academic collaboration.
  • The release of a new plant variety Inula racemosa “Him Pushkarmool.”
  • Launch of stevia-based products developed by RJ Saints, Una.
  • Inauguration of Jaivsampada Udyan, a garden dedicated to bioresource conservation.

In recognition of their contributions, female scientists and staff were honored, reinforcing the day’s theme of celebrating women in science. The event drew dignitaries, media representatives, and enthusiastic participation from students, including 39 students and 2 teachers from JNV Paprola under the Jigyasa programme.

National Science Day at IHBT was not just a commemoration of a historic discovery—it was a vibrant reminder that science, when rooted in curiosity and inclusivity, can truly transform lives and shape the future of Bharat.
