Bindal praised Om Birla for bringing a resolution on emergency in Lok Sabha

As we enter the 50th year of the Emergency, this 18th Lok Sabha reiterates its commitment to uphold, protect and preserve the Constitution built by Baba Saheb Ambedkar.

We are also committed to upholding the principles of democracy in India, rule of law and decentralization of powers in the country.

We commend the faith of the people of India in constitutional institutions and their unprecedented struggle which led to the end of the Emergency and the establishment of constitutional rule once again.

Today, on 26 June 1975, the country woke up facing the cruel realities of Emergency.

On this day in 1975, the then Cabinet had post-facto ratified the Emergency, approving this dictatorial and unconstitutional decision.

Therefore, to reiterate our commitment to our parliamentary system and this second independence achieved after countless sacrifices, it is necessary to pass this resolution today.

We also believe that our young generation must know about this dark chapter of democracy.

During the Emergency, countless people were tortured and their families had to suffer immense pain due to illegal arrests and government harassment.

The Emergency had destroyed the lives of many citizens of India and many people had died.

In that dark period of Emergency, two minutes silence was also observed in the Lok Sabha in memory of such dutiful and patriotic citizens of India who lost their lives at the hands of the dictatorial government of Congress.
