Atal Tunnel Reopens, Tourists Flock to Lahaul’s Snowy Charm

After days of being cut off by heavy snowfall, the Atal Tunnel on the Manali–Leh highway has reopened, once again unlocking the winter magic of Lahaul Valley. The closure, which lasted nearly four days after the January 23–24 snowstorm, had left the region isolated. Thanks to swift snow-clearing operations by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), connectivity was restored, first for emergency services and now for tourists.

With restrictions lifted, visitors are pouring in—many driving 4×4 vehicles beyond Solang Nala to witness frozen rivers, pristine white meadows, and the dramatic Himalayan vistas around Sissu. For travellers, it’s a long-awaited chance to step into a winter wonderland; for locals, it’s a welcome revival of tourism that sustains livelihoods.

Hotels, taxi operators, and guides are already seeing a surge in demand. “This reopening is a lifeline for us,” said Hem Raj Sharma, a tourism stakeholder in Manali, reflecting the relief felt across the valley.

Authorities, however, are keeping safety front and center. Traffic personnel have been deployed, and tourists are urged to follow guidelines, avoid unnecessary halts, and stay updated on weather advisories.

Perched at over 10,000 feet, the Atal Tunnel is more than just an engineering marvel—it’s a gateway to Lahaul’s serene winter beauty. Its reopening has brought joy to travellers and reassurance to locals, reminding everyone why this stretch of the Himalayas is so special.
