All India Lawyers Union (AILU), Himachal State Committee Condemns Incident of Shoe Throwing at Chief Justice

The All India Lawyers Union (AILU), Himachal Pradesh State Committee, has strongly condemned the incident of a shoe being thrown in the courtroom of the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, Justice B.R. Gavai, on October 6, 2025, by sending a memorandum to the Hon’ble President of the Republic of India today.

AILU described this as a direct attack on the dignity of the judiciary and the basic spirit of the Constitution, stating that the incident is not only intolerable but also appears to be a planned conspiracy to weaken constitutional values like judicial independence and secularism.

State Committee President Advocate Niranjan Verma and Secretary Advocate Surendra Verma said that the restraint and dignity with which the Hon’ble Chief Justice handled the situation is an exemplary model for the entire judicial community. They stated that this incident is a disgrace to the entire legal profession and should be condemned by everyone who believes in constitutional values.

AILU also stated that while the Constitution grants the right to dissent, it cannot under any circumstances be expressed through disgraceful or violent conduct. The judiciary is the ultimate institution protecting the Constitution, and therefore, it is the duty of every citizen to uphold its dignity.

The AILU State Committee put forth three key demands:

  1. All citizens who have faith in the Constitution should collectively condemn this incident and the intent behind it.
  2. The legal fraternity should express its solidarity in protest against this incident in a democratic and peaceful manner.
  3. The concerned authorities should conduct a fair investigation into the incident and punish the culprits to ensure such incidents are not repeated in the future.

AILU concluded by stating that this is an insult not only to the Chief Justice but to the entire judiciary and the Indian Constitution.
