After a woman’s story of poverty went viral on social media, the administration finally took action

Despite spending billions of rupees on poverty elevation and providing housing for the rural poor, the hands of the government could not reach to most needy so far.

Social media broke out a story disclosing the pathetic plight of a poor woman in the Assembly Constituency of Education Minister Rohit Thakur recently. After coverage of the poverty of the woman by the Social media, Himachal Pradesh High Court has stepped into the matter. The matter was referred to the district legal services authority.

It was after the direction that the administration came out of slumber and carried out the inspection of the unsafe house of Smt Chander Kala on 2nd June 2023.

 According to confirmed sources a team under the leadership of SDM Kotkhai comprising of the officers and officials from the departments of Revenue, Panchayati Raj present on the spot.

The panchayat took steps to enlist the woman in the BPL list, and the BDO office is in the process of allotting her a house under the Mahila Awas Yojana.

The government has ensured that both these steps are expected to be completed before 10th June. To bring back the socially isolated woman to the mainstream of life. Panchayat representatives shall also be encouraged to take steps towards woman’s self-reliance by associating her with a Self Help Group under the NRLM scheme. 

As an immediate relief measure, she has been shifted to a suitable nearby premise whose expenses shall be borne by the panchayat.

SDM informed the LSA that it shall be the endeavor of the local administration that benefits of other government schemes such as Grihni Suvidha Yojana, Himcare, etc are extended to her family in a time-bound manner by coordinating with the concerned departments.
