A Lifeline for Himachal Families: Free Cancer Care and Expanded Health Coverage Through HIMCARE

In a heartening development for families across Himachal Pradesh, the HIMCARE health scheme has taken a major step forward—now offering free cancer treatment at two renowned hospitals in Chandigarh: Tata Memorial Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Center in New Chandigarh, and GMCH Sector 32. This is in addition to the existing facility at PGI Chandigarh, giving patients more options and easier access to life-saving care.

To make it easier for people to benefit, the Himcare portal will remain open throughout July, allowing residents to register for new cards or renew expired ones. In a thoughtful move, the government now permits renewals of expired cards during March, June, September, and December—ensuring no one is left behind due to missed deadlines.

Each HIMCARE card covers cashless treatment for up to five family members, spanning over 3,227 diseases, including major surgeries and dialysis. Currently, over 5.26 lakh families are enrolled in the scheme, and dialysis services are now free at all private hospitals within the state.

The card is free for vulnerable groups such as BPL families, MNREGA workers, street vendors, orphans, and prisoners. Others—including single women, contract workers, mid-day meal staff, and people with disabilities—can get the card for just ₹365. For the rest, the cost is ₹1,000—a small price for peace of mind.

HIMCARE is designed to fill the gaps left by Ayushman Bharat, offering a safety net for those in the unorganized sector and economically weaker sections. It’s more than just a health card—it’s a promise of care, dignity, and hope.
