10 years of PM Jan Dhan, opening 53 crore accounts has done wonders: Anurag Thakur
Former Union Minister and MP from Hamirpur Lok Sabha constituency, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur, on the completion of 10 years of Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), has described the scheme as a transformational step towards financial inclusion.
Shri Anurag Singh Thakur said, “A decade ago, the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji started the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) with the idea that every person in India should have a bank account so that every citizen gets connected to the banking system. Tax can make their life easier. Today, on completion of 10 years of this scheme, its popularity itself is a proof of the success of this scheme. Although at that time, some people dismissed it as a mere ‘gimmick’, today it has become a major factor in the financial condition of India. It is one of the most successful initiatives in history, which has fundamentally reshaped the financial inclusion landscape. Over 53 crore bank accounts have been opened in the last ten years, i.e. an average of 44 lakh new accounts are opened every month. This historic achievement has brought millions of people into the formal banking system for the first time”
Speaking further, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur said, “The total deposits in Jan Dhan accounts have now crossed ₹ 2 lakh crore, which reflects the unwavering trust of the people on the Prime Minister and his schemes. These small savings have changed the lives of countless people. The impact of the scheme is particularly notable in rural/semi-urban India, where 67% of the accounts are in these areas. It has empowered the underprivileged, ensuring that access to banking services is no longer a distant dream. Not a dream but a reality for everyone, whatever their social or economic background”
Shri Anurag Singh Thakur said “Women have been at the forefront of this change of financial inclusion. 56% of Jan Dhan account holders are women. This has not only promoted financial independence but also contributed to gender equality, empowering Nari Shakti The foundation laid by this scheme is strong and its results speak for themselves”
