Irish Guitarist Finds Rhythm in Himachal: Graham Deunes Learns Tabla at Gurukul Dharech

Music has no borders, and Ireland’s celebrated guitarist Graham Deunes is proving it in the hills of Himachal Pradesh. Driven by his passion for rhythm, Graham has arrived at Gurukul Dharech to immerse himself in the art of Tabla, under the guidance of renowned Hindustani classical maestro Vikram Gandharva.

For years, Graham had been learning Tabla from Gandharva through online classes. Now, by stepping into the traditional Gurukul setting in person, he is experiencing music in its purest form—living amidst the serene valleys, surrounded by nature, and absorbing the discipline of Indian classical traditions.

Interestingly, Graham’s wife is also deeply rooted in music. A well-known Irish singer and the President of the Irish Music Artists Association, she and Graham regularly host Irish music concerts back home, keeping their cultural heritage alive while engaging with global audiences.

During his stay in India, Graham will also share his own expertise. At the Vikram Gandharva Music School in Baltana, Chandigarh, he will conduct guitar workshops, offering students a rare chance to blend Western strings with Indian rhythms. This cross-cultural exchange promises to enrich young learners, opening doors to new musical possibilities.

Founded by Vikram Gandharva, Gurukul Dharech has already become a hub for rhythm enthusiasts worldwide. With its annual Tabla Summer and Winter Camps, it attracts students from across India and abroad. Today, it stands as a growing international center where musicians from different cultures learn from one another, strengthening the bridge between East and West.

In Graham’s journey, the harmony of Irish melodies and Indian beats comes alive—reminding us that music, in its essence, is a universal language.
