From Battlefield to Podium: Ajay Kumar’s Inspiring Journey and Himachal’s Historic Support for Athletes

Ajay Kumar of Mandi has become a symbol of resilience and determination, transitioning from a soldier who lost his leg in combat to a silver medalist in para-athletics at the 2023 Para Asian Games in China. In recognition of his incredible achievement, the Himachal Pradesh government honored him with a ₹2.5 crore cash prize—a testament to the state’s commitment to supporting its athletes.

Ajay expressed heartfelt gratitude to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu for increasing the prize money for international athletes, calling it a much-needed step to boost morale and inspire youth to pursue sports.

Turning Adversity into Triumph

Born on July 28, 1990, in Nagwain, Mandi district, Ajay joined the Indian Army in 2010 with dreams of serving his country. However, a life-altering incident on November 14, 2017, during an operation in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir, left him without his left leg. What could have been a devastating blow became a turning point in his life.

In 2018, Ajay was introduced to para-sports by Lalit Thakur, the founder of the Himachal Pradesh Para Sports Association. Inspired and determined, Ajay began training in running, shot put, and javelin throw, overcoming physical and emotional challenges.

Support and Training

With the support of his family, coach, and the Artificial Limb Centre in Pune, which provided him with a cheetah running blade, Ajay honed his skills. He debuted at the National Para Championship in 2021, securing six gold and three silver medals. His hard work and dedication culminated in a historic silver medal win at the Para Asian Games, where he represented India in athletics.

Himachal’s Unprecedented Support for Athletes

Recognizing the dedication of athletes like Ajay, the Himachal Pradesh government has significantly increased cash prizes for international medal winners:

• Gold medalists: ₹50 lakhs raised to ₹4 crores
• Silver medalists: ₹30 lakhs raised to ₹2.5 crores
• Bronze medalists: ₹20 lakhs raised to ₹1.5 crores

This policy has been welcomed across the sports community. Ajay called it a transformative step, emphasizing how it motivates athletes and encourages youth to embrace sports.
