Himachal Takes Top Honors for Nurturing Startup Dreams
In a celebration of innovation and economic growth, Himachal Pradesh was honored as a “Top Performer” for building a vibrant startup ecosystem at the 5th National States’ Startup Ranking ceremony in New Delhi on January 16, 2026.
The awards, presented by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), were graced by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Commerce & Industry Minister Shri Piyush Goyal. Himachal Pradesh’s achievement highlights its successful, multi-year journey to empower new businesses.
The state’s dedicated team was commended for their pivotal roles. Shri R.D. Nazeem, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary (Industries), was lauded for creating an enabling environment and bridging academia with industry. Dr. Yunus, IAS, Commissioner of Industries, was recognized for his visionary initiatives and effective implementation, while Ms. Deepika Khatri, Joint Director, was celebrated for her leadership and proactive efforts in promoting women-led startups.
Building a Foundation for Success
The Department of Industries, Himachal Pradesh, impressed national evaluators with several key initiatives:
· Supporting five incubators with dedicated funding for mentorship and operational strength.
· Organizing state-led initiatives like pitching sessions to connect startups with vital investor funding.
· Reimbursing up to 75% of patent costs to protect innovative ideas.
· Championing circular economy startups focused on sustainability through research and innovation.
For these efforts, the state was also specially recognized as an ‘Institutional Support Pioneer,’ ‘Infrastructure Support Pathfinder,’ and ‘Market Access & Reach Champion.’
A Commitment to Future Entrepreneurs
State leadership expressed pride and a renewed commitment to fostering entrepreneurship. Chief Minister Shri Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu emphasized the government’s dedication to strengthening the startup ecosystem and generating employment. “All-round facilities will be provided for existing and new startups through various modes,” he stated.
Industries Minister Shri Harshwardhan Chauhan credited the recognition to the department’s sustained efforts, promising continued institutional and technical support for all aspiring entrepreneurs.
Officials outlined a forward-looking vision, which includes connecting startups with angel investors and e-commerce platforms, offering plug-and-play facilities, providing seed money, and launching outreach programs. Special emphasis will now be placed on promoting rural-based and women-driven startups.
This national accolade marks a significant milestone in Himachal Pradesh’s startup journey, which has seen the state grow from an ‘Aspiring Leader’ in 2018 to a ‘Top Performer’ today, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to turning innovative ideas into reality.
