Shimla’s Lakkar Bazaar-Ridge Funicular Set to Ease Steep Climb
The uphill journey from Lakkar Bazaar to The Ridge in Shimla is set to become easier, with the city’s new funicular rail facility nearing completion and expected to be ready by November 30.
Developed at an estimated cost of Rs 15.5 crore, the project is a joint initiative of the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) and Shimla Municipal Corporation (MC). Trial runs and safety inspections are currently underway as the project enters its final stage.
The funicular will connect the Lakkar Bazaar Old Bus Stand area with The Ridge, offering residents and tourists an alternative to walking up the steep stretch. The facility is expected to carry around 8 to 10 passengers at a time.
Shimla Mayor Surinder Chauhan said the project aims to provide tourists with easier access to Mall Road and The Ridge while also adding a new attraction to the city.
“The funicular will offer tourists and locals a new experience, with panoramic views of Shimla’s valleys and natural surroundings from an elevated point,” Chauhan said. He added that a selfie point would also be developed nearby to allow visitors to capture the scenic views.
The facility is expected to be particularly useful for senior citizens and local residents who find the steep climb between Lakkar Bazaar and The Ridge difficult.
“The funicular will make the journey much easier and more convenient for them,” the Mayor said.
Meanwhile, another mobility project is taking shape near Auckland Tunnel, where a lift is being installed to improve pedestrian access. According to Chauhan, the construction agency has set March 2027 as the target for completing the facility.
Once operational, the lift is also expected to provide relief to residents and commuters using the busy stretch.
