Shimla Set for Smart Parking Revolution as Online Booking System Nears Launch

Finding a parking spot in Shimla could soon become much easier for tourists. The Municipal Corporation is preparing to introduce an app-based parking booking system before the New Year, allowing visitors to check parking availability and reserve spaces online even before entering the city.

The initiative aims to tackle one of Shimla’s most persistent challenges, especially during peak tourist seasons when thousands of vehicles enter the hill town every day. Visitors often spend considerable time driving around in search of parking, adding to congestion on busy roads and around popular attractions.

The situation is made more difficult by the shortage of parking facilities at many hotels. As a result, tourists frequently rely on municipal parking lots or roadside parking, putting additional pressure on the city’s already limited parking infrastructure during weekends, holidays and festive periods.

To improve traffic management, the Municipal Corporation has installed LED display screens at three key entry points to the city: Taradevi, Tavi Mor and Dhalli. The screens are now being linked to a smart parking system that will provide real-time information on available parking spaces across the town.

Officials said nearly ten major parking lots, including facilities at Cart Road, Chhota Shimla, Sanjauli, the Bus Stand and Dhalli, are being integrated into the system. Once operational, visitors will be able to view vacant parking slots on the LED screens and through a mobile application, helping them decide where to park before reaching busy areas.

The app will also enable users to reserve parking spaces in advance and make online payments, reducing the uncertainty and inconvenience often associated with parking in the city.

By allowing motorists to plan ahead, the system is expected to cut down the time spent searching for parking and reduce unnecessary vehicle movement on crowded roads. It could also help ease traffic bottlenecks near tourist hotspots by directing drivers to available spaces in a more organised manner.

The Municipal Corporation had earlier conducted a successful pilot project at two parking lots in 2024. However, the initiative could not move forward due to the absence of a final agreement with the implementing company. The corporation is now working with a new agency to roll out the service citywide.

As Shimla continues to witness growing tourist numbers and increasing vehicle traffic, parking remains one of the city’s most pressing urban challenges. Limited space, inadequate hotel parking and roadside parking often contribute to traffic jams and inconvenience for both residents and visitors.

Officials believe the smart parking system could offer a practical solution by providing accurate, real-time parking information and enabling advance booking. If implemented smoothly, the technology-driven initiative may significantly improve traffic management and visitor convenience during the upcoming winter tourist season and New Year rush.
