CSIR-IHBT Marks 85 Years of CSIR with Focus on Innovation, Sustainability and Community Engagement

The CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (CSIR-IHBT), Palampur, celebrated the 85th Foundation Day of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) with enthusiasm and pride on its campus. Established in 1942, CSIR has grown into one of India’s largest research networks, comprising 37 national laboratories, 39 outreach centres, an Innovation Complex, and three specialized units across the country.

Welcoming the distinguished guests, staff and students, CSIR-IHBT Director Dr. Sudesh Kumar Yadav highlighted the institute’s scientific contributions in floriculture, aroma crops, biodiversity conservation and the discovery of new species. He emphasized the importance of leveraging science and technology to address societal needs and improve livelihoods.

Chief Guest Dr. Chindi Vasudevappa, Senior Director at FARE Labs Pvt. Ltd. and former Vice Chancellor of NIFTEM, Sonipat, lauded CSIR’s remarkable journey and its role in driving research-led development in India. He noted that CSIR has consistently contributed to the nation’s self-reliance while creating solutions with global impact.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Manoj Kumar, Director of the BRIC-National Institute of Plant Genome Research, New Delhi, shared insights into recent advances in plant genome research and their significance for agriculture and society. He stressed the need to address climate challenges, strengthen nutritional security, and equip young people with skills aligned to national priorities.

A key highlight of the celebration was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between CSIR-IHBT and Himalayan Mycology Research Institute Pvt. Ltd., Palampur, aimed at promoting mushroom-based technologies and value-added products. The institute also signed a material transfer agreement with the Municipal Corporation, Palampur, for the use of a decomposer technology that converts organic waste into compost.

The event additionally recognized the achievements of staff members’ children who excelled in sports. Scientists, employees, students and representatives from neighbouring institutions participated in the celebrations. As part of the CSIR-Jigyasa programme, 40 students and two teachers from PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya, Palampur, also attended, gaining firsthand exposure to the world of scientific research and innovation.
