When Preparedness Becomes a Life Skill: A Hands-On Safety Day in Beolia
On 3 October 2026, the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA) carried its School Safety and Preparedness Programme to Government Senior Secondary School, Beolia, Shimla. But this was not just another awareness lecture. It was a day of learning by doing—of practising the skills that can save lives when every second counts.
The session was led by the HP Home Guards, 3rd Battalion, under Platoon Commander Shri Naresh Kumar Verma and his team. Students and school staff came together to build their disaster preparedness, awareness, and emergency response capabilities.
They learned and practised:
🔹 Disaster awareness
🔹 Drop–Cover–Hold during earthquakes
🔹 First Aid
🔹 Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
🔹 Emergency carrying methods
🔹 Early warning applications
The training came alive through practical demonstrations and hands-on sessions. Participants didn’t just hear what to do—they tried it themselves, asked questions, and built the confidence needed to respond calmly and effectively during an emergency.
The programme was supported by DDMA Shimla, with active cooperation from Principal Ms. Nisha Sharma Ji and the school staff.
👩🎓 Students: 150
👨🏫 Teaching & Non-Teaching Staff: 25
👥 Total Participants: 175
Through initiatives like this, HPSDMA is quietly building a culture of disaster preparedness and resilience in schools—one student, one teacher, and one skill at a time. Because when emergencies strike, readiness is not just useful. It is everything.
