Bank Strike Looms: Customers Advised to Finish Work Before Three-Day Banking Disruption
Bank customers across Himachal Pradesh may face inconvenience as bank employee unions prepare for a nationwide three-day strike from September 28 to 30, with branch-based services expected to be significantly affected.
The strike has been called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), which represents employees from seven major banking unions. While digital banking services are expected to function normally, branch operations, particularly in public sector banks, could see major disruptions.
The timing of the strike could create an extended break in banking services, coming immediately after the weekend and the second Saturday holiday. Customers who rely on physical bank branches are therefore being urged to complete important work in advance.
Five-Day Banking Week Remains Key Demand
At the heart of the agitation is the long-pending demand for a five-day banking week. Bank unions want all Saturdays declared holidays, bringing the sector in line with many other industries that already follow a two-day weekend.
Union leaders argue that longer working hours during weekdays can offset the reduction in working days. Although the Indian Banks’ Association had agreed to the proposal during the 2024 wage settlement, the required government approval is still pending.
Another major concern, the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, has been put on hold by the Centre. However, the unresolved issue of a five-day work week continues to fuel employee dissatisfaction.
Branch Services Likely to Bear the Brunt
Customers visiting bank branches in districts including Shimla, Kangra, Mandi, Solan, Hamirpur, Una and Bilaspur may experience delays or service interruptions.
Among the services that could be affected are:
- Cash deposits and withdrawals at branches
- Cheque processing and clearing services
- Account opening and closure formalities
- Documentation and verification work
- Loan-related paperwork
- Other branch-dependent banking services
The actual impact will vary depending on employee participation and individual bank arrangements.
Half-Yearly Closing Adds to Concerns
The strike coincides with September 30, the half-yearly closing date for banks, making the timing particularly sensitive. Banking institutions may face additional pressure in completing reconciliation, settlements and other financial closing processes.
Digital Banking to Continue Uninterrupted
Despite the strike, customers can continue using UPI, internet banking, mobile banking, ATMs and cash deposit machines for routine transactions. Banks have also been asked to ensure adequate cash availability in ATMs to reduce inconvenience.
Authorities have appealed to unions to resolve the matter through dialogue, but the UFBU has decided to proceed with the strike. The unions have also warned of a possible indefinite strike from October 26 if their key demand remains unresolved.
For customers in Himachal Pradesh, the advice is simple: complete urgent branch-related work before the strike begins and rely on digital banking channels wherever possible. While banking services will not come to a halt, physical branch operations are expected to face the greatest disruption.
