From AI Buzz to Business Impact: IIT Mandi’s AiXcelrate 4.0
Explores the Future of Leadership in the Age of Intelligence
As artificial intelligence rapidly reshapes industries, the question is no longer whether organisations should adopt AI, but how they can turn it into lasting business value. This was the central theme of AiXcelrate 4.0, the flagship AI and leadership conclave hosted by the School of Management at IIT Mandi, which brought together industry leaders, technology experts, academics and students for two days of insightful conversations on the future of AI-driven leadership.
Held on 19-20 September 2026, the conclave revolved around the theme “Next Gen AI-Leadership: Beyond the Horizon to Monetizing AI”, focusing on how businesses can move beyond experimentation and automation to unlock sustainable growth, competitive advantage and profitability through artificial intelligence.
Opening the event, Prof. Laxmidhar Behera, Director, IIT Mandi, highlighted the importance of responsible AI leadership. He stressed that while technological advancements continue to accelerate, true leadership lies in ensuring that innovation remains aligned with human values, societal well-being and ethical decision-making. According to him, institutions like IIT Mandi have a crucial role in nurturing future leaders who can balance technological expertise with social responsibility.
Beyond Efficiency: Creating Strategic Advantage
The first day of the conclave focused on a critical challenge facing businesses today: how to move from AI-driven productivity gains to genuine strategic advantage.
During the panel discussion titled “Moving from Productivity and Automation to Strategic Advantage: The AI Value Shift,” experts examined whether efficiency improvements alone are enough to create long-term business success. Among the speakers was Ashley D’Acouza, Chief Data Officer at Hindustan Coca-Cola, who noted that while AI technologies are widely available, competitive advantage depends on leadership, vision and the ability to apply these technologies effectively to specific business needs.
The day also featured mentoring sessions and industry-academia interactions, giving students a chance to engage directly with practitioners and gain insights into emerging management challenges. The proceedings concluded on a celebratory note with HimTarang, a cultural evening that showcased creativity and talent from the IIT Mandi community.
Turning AI Adoption into Business Growth
The second day shifted the conversation from adoption to measurable impact.
The panel “Moving from AI Adoption to AI Advantage: Accelerating Growth” explored how organisations can use AI to drive customer acquisition, personalisation, innovation, decision-making and revenue generation. Discussions centred on identifying meaningful metrics that distinguish successful AI initiatives from mere technological experimentation.
One of the key highlights came from Rohit Kilam, Chief Technology Officer at HDFC Life, who reflected on the evolving relationship between humans and machines. He argued that while AI will increasingly handle tasks that can be verified and standardised, human relevance will remain strongest in areas that require judgement, interpretation and decision-making under uncertainty.
The final panel, “Moving from Pilot to Profit: Scaling AI,” addressed one of the most pressing issues for organisations today: how to successfully scale promising AI initiatives into enterprise-wide solutions. Experts discussed challenges related to governance, workforce readiness, infrastructure, integration and ensuring long-term return on investment.
Bringing Real-World Challenges into the Classroom
A standout feature of AiXcelrate 4.0 was its Industry Case Competition, sponsored by 6D Technologies. MBA and Integrated MBA students were tasked with solving a real-world business challenge, developing strategic recommendations and presenting their solutions before a jury comprising industry experts.
The competition encouraged participants to blend analytical thinking with innovation and practical problem-solving. Team Tactical Minds emerged as the winner, while The Case Solvers and The InsightX secured the first and second runner-up positions respectively.
Understanding AI Through Scope, Speed and Scale
Reflecting on the event, Prof. Anjan K. Swain, Chairperson of the School of Management, IIT Mandi, emphasised that the future business impact of AI can be understood through three key dimensions: scope, speed and scale. As AI expands across functions, technological change accelerates and organisations seek to maximise business value, understanding these dimensions becomes increasingly important.
He noted that AiXcelrate serves as a valuable platform where management education meets industry practice, enabling meaningful conversations around the opportunities and challenges of AI-led transformation.
A Platform for Shaping the Future
The conclave concluded with student presentations, mentoring interactions and a valedictory session, reinforcing the importance of collaboration between academia and industry. More than just a discussion on technology, AiXcelrate 4.0 highlighted the leadership, governance and strategic thinking required to harness AI effectively.
As AI continues to evolve, the event underscored a powerful message: the future of artificial intelligence will not be determined solely by technological breakthroughs, but by the wisdom, responsibility and vision of the leaders guiding its adoption.
