HPU Sets Sights on 50 Patents, Strengthens Push for Innovation and Research

Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), Shimla, is stepping up its focus on innovation and research, setting an ambitious goal of securing 50 patents within the current year. The move reflects the university’s growing commitment to strengthening its academic standing and making a mark on the global research map.

To turn this vision into reality, HPU has partnered with Enoable IP Consultancy Private Limited, a Noida-based firm specialising in Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). Through a newly signed Memorandum of Agreement (MoA), the consultancy will guide faculty members, researchers, and students through every stage of the patent process—from idea validation and drafting to filing, legal prosecution, and even commercialisation.

What makes this initiative particularly encouraging for researchers is the university’s decision to bear the cost of patent filing for its faculty members. By removing financial barriers, HPU hopes to motivate more researchers to protect and showcase their innovations.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mahavir Singh highlighted the growing importance of patents in today’s academic landscape. He explained that intellectual property, especially patents, has become a key benchmark for measuring a university’s research strength, innovation potential, and overall quality.

“Patents are not just about recognition—they help improve rankings, boost industry partnerships, and create real-world impact,” he said. “Our goal is to build a strong culture of innovation where ideas are not only developed but also protected and translated into practical solutions.”

Over the past few years, HPU has already been working towards strengthening its research ecosystem. The university has been actively promoting high-quality research, encouraging funded projects, and supporting innovation-led initiatives. The new partnership is expected to further accelerate these efforts by giving researchers the expertise and support they need to bring their ideas to life.

Prof. Singh also emphasised that research and innovation are at the heart of any strong academic institution. By focusing on patents, the university aims to ensure that its research goes beyond academic publications and contributes meaningfully to society and the economy.

With the backing of Enoable’s technical expertise, researchers at HPU will now have better support in navigating the often complex world of intellectual property. This, in turn, could help transform lab ideas into market-ready solutions, fostering entrepreneurship and innovation within the campus.

Overall, the initiative signals a clear shift in focus—from traditional research output to innovation-driven impact. If successful, it could place HPU among institutions that are not just generating knowledge but actively shaping the future through it.
