Peas sold at Solan vegetable market for only Rs 28 per kilogram
Hill peas from the areas along the Sirmaur border in Junga tehsil have started arriving in various markets across the state, and farmers are receiving average prices for them. According to farmers, good quality peas were sold for only ₹28 per gram in Solan, the state’s largest vegetable market. Last year, the average price of peas in Solan and Dhali vegetable markets was ₹40 to ₹45 per kilogram. Farmers say that if the price of peas does not increase, they will be able to recover the cost of pea seeds this year.
Let us inform you that this time due to less rainfall in winter, the pea crop has been greatly affected. Peas from most of the Panchayats of Junga region are sent to Solan, the biggest vegetable market of the state. These days the pea season is at its peak in the region. Progressive farmers Dayaram Verma and Daulat Ram Mehta said that due to less rainfall in winter this year, the yield of pea crop has been average. This time the pea crop was ready about a fortnight before the scheduled time.
Vinod Kumar Arhatiya says that the price of peas, which has been trending for the past few days, remained stable on Tuesday. Peas from Shimla and Sirmaur regions sold for 25 to 28 rupees per kilogram, whereas a few days ago, the price was up to 30 rupees. Hailstorms in many areas have turned the pea pods white, resulting in farmers not getting good prices.
Sandesh Kumar, a driver from the Junga area, said that he transports vegetables like peas from Peeran, Satlai, and Balog Panchayats every year, but this time the market prices for peas are quite low. He added that the pea harvest this year is slightly lower than last year. It’s worth noting that the first pea crop begins to emerge in the Junga area each year during the first week of March and April. Following this, the tomato, capsicum, and French bean season begins.
