Kuhu Learns to Deal With Life’ – Heartwarming Middle Grade Fiction, Launched in Shimla

The Conference Hall at Gaiety Theatre came alive as Kuhu Learns to Deal With Life, a captivating middle-grade fiction book by Sonia Dogra, was launched under the esteemed aegis of the Keekli Charitable Trust, with the support of the Language & Culture Department, media partners HimachalTonite and Keekli, Brews & Books Café, the Association of Book Clubs, and all its anonymous supporters. The event drew a diverse audience of young readers, literary enthusiasts, and prominent members of Shimla’s literary community.

Sonia Dogra, an ex-educator, editor, and widely published poet and writer, makes her debut in middle-grade fiction with this work. Drawing upon her deep understanding of young minds, she offers readers a narrative that blends empathy, reflection, and hope—making Kuhu Learns to Deal With Life a meaningful addition to contemporary children’s literature.

The launch ceremony was graced by the presence of Shri Shriniwas Joshi, ex-civil servant, columnist, and renowned writer, who presided over the programme. A thought-provoking panel discussion, led by Prof. Meenakshi Faith Paul, delved into the book’s themes, emotional depth, and the importance of acknowledging childhood experiences in literature.

Young book lovers Varahi Thakur, a Class 5 student of Auckland House School; Aarika Sharma, a Class 8 student of Monal Public School; Vihaan, a Class 5 student of St. Edward’s School; Arin, a Class 7 student of Swaran Public School; and Pritha Doegar, a Class 11 student of Auckland House School, shared their insightful perspectives on the story. They reflected on the valuable lessons they derived from Kuhu’s journey, resonating with its honesty and warmth.

The interactive nature of the event added a unique charm, as young readers engaged directly with the author, Sonia Dogra, discussing their thoughts, curiosities, and takeaways from the book. These meaningful exchanges not only deepened their connection with Kuhu’s story but also encouraged them to think critically about reading and storytelling. The presence of seasoned writers and reviewers further enriched the experience, guiding and motivating young minds to cultivate their love for literature, reading, and creative writing.

Published by Bare Bones Publishing and Sahana Ahmed, Kuhu Learns to Deal With Life follows the trials and tribulations of its seven-year-old protagonist, Kuhu Joshi, as she learns to navigate the complexities of childhood.
